Literature Text

”But my friend, do you see all the wealth I could offer, the glory I'd give,
The bright crown that you'd wear as you stand by my side, and as I stand by yours?
Do you long for the power for which we have reached, that you said that you need, did you not?
Take my hand now: for you I would make all your dreams in this world become true;
Take my hand now: for you I would make the new powerful, absolute king,
Or refuse and thus break my whole spirit and soul; yes, go leave me, your friend,
For your friend I am yet and an ally of Noldor, and faithfully yours;
Went with you to the battles, with you for the win, and I followed your banners up high;
When you fought with your doubts and your fears, was I not there with you in the dark?
In your heart you remember how I was your light when you were all alone,
And how I was your faith when the others just scorned your ambitious ideas;
Yea, how I was your warmth when the world had turned cold, you remember those times?
So my friend – still I call you as such – won't you place all your trust in my hands one more time?”
Sauron to Celebrimbor. Silmarillion fanfiction in poetry form.

The basic idea behind the writing process was that Sauron is talking in anapestic hexametre, i.e. it's  a reverse, "twisted", opposite form of dactylic hexametre, which is the traditional metre for heroic poetry (Homer and the Iliad etc.).

(Anapest - unstressed-unstressed-stressed.
Dactyl - stressed-unstressed-unstressed.
Hexametre - six feet per verse.)

I wrote some more on it, a narrative in dactyls, but that was more difficult to keep up. Also in the end I felt that Celebrimbor's possible reply/last words were better left for guesswork.

(Alternate title: [Adele voice] "We could have had it aaallll--!" )

While I have no idea about what anapestic hexametre is (this is why I write haikus and free verse :P), I like this! :D A lot - I can really imagine Sauron saying all of this. :D
